Merci, France For An Unforgettable Ryder Cup

The 42nd Ryder Cup not only put France back on the map as one of the best golf destinations in the world, it also brought to attention to the country’s deep history with the game of golf. Teams Europe and USA battled it out at the Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, a suburb of Paris with some (the Europeans) making history, and others (the Americans) making bad shots.

TEAM EUROPE AMAZING VICTORY

Team Europe claimed its sixth consecutive victory on home soil at the 2018 Ryder Cup. With an outstanding 17.5 to 10.5 points finish on Sunday, the Europeans have now successfully claimed the Cup seven of the last nine matchups.
History was made in France over the weekend as Francesco Molinari became the first European player ever in the Ryder Cup to go 5-0-0 in his matches. Team Europe player Sergio Garcia also left his mark in the Ryder Cup history books becoming the all-time leader in points with 25.5. Team USA Phil Mickelson unfortunately reached another all-time standing, but with a record 22 matches lost.

A UNIQUE CHALLENGE FOR AMERICAN PLAYERS

The Albatros Course of Le Golf National proved to be a unique challenge to the Americans with its elevation changes, rippling fairways and challenging lies. The strategic placement of hazards and other obstructions in favored landing areas was simple, yet genius. The Europeans took charge on their home turf early in the weekend and never looked back.
French and European citizens swarmed the grandstands and surrounding areas of Le Golf National, and warmly welcomed the American tourists/fans. France has been a well-kept secret in the golf travel circles for decades, but after the Ryder Cup, the country can surely expect an influx in golf tourism. Some of France’s top golf courses compete with the best ranked golf courses in the world for championship golf. There are currently more than 700 golf courses across the country, each of them hosting a diverse display of topography, scenery and culture. Top regions for golf tourism in France can be found in the vineyards, historical castle regions and even near the snowcapped mountains.
